Advice on getting your career on track

If you want to get your career on track, you can’t just sit around and hope that it happens. You have to be proactive. There are different ways to do that, depending on who you ask about it. If you’re the kind of person who isn’t much of a go-getter on your own, you might even want to get a coach or a buddy who will work with you.

If you’ve been out of the job market for a while or you’re just getting into it, you also might not have that much to put on a resume – and you might not know how to write a resume correctly so it will show off the skills that you do have.

With that in mind, you can get help from professionals who write resumes and other documents for a living, search the Web for information and sample resumes from people in your field, or work with colleagues, friends, family, or classmates to come up with a resume that showcases only the things that you do well.

Lying on a resume is never a good idea, but that doesn’t mean that you have to list every bad thing that you’ve done, either. If you graduated but your GPA was less than stellar, for example, leave your GPA off of your resume.

Another way to get a great career or to move up in the one that you’ve got is to stay current. If you graduated 10 years ago and have been raising your children, you might not have the necessary and relevant skills for today’s job market. Since that can be a serious detriment to getting a job, be sure that you take classes to improve the skills that you will need or that you’ll need to go to the next level in your current job.

The medical field is one place where you’ll be more likely to find good jobs now, and where companies are still hiring for all kinds of positions. Getting the skills that you need for many of these jobs is not that difficult, and once you have them you have steady work – as long as you make sure that you address any continuing education requirements that you’ll have.

If you don’t keep up, you could stop yourself from being promoted and you might even end up losing the job you have, so watch out for issues like that.
